When you’re used to entertaining the chaos within, the idea of a life that doesn’t constantly hurt never even occurs to you.

Just recently, I came across a YouTube video of a girl talking about living a “soft life.” Before I even clicked on it, I found myself frowning a little — I’m not going to lie.
I mean, what even is a “soft life”? At first, I imagined something straight out of a slice-of-life movie: the main character enjoying lots of rest and savoring the mundane pleasures of life.
It sounded like the dream of anyone stuck in a demanding day job. But life is dynamic, and isn’t it a bit delusional to wish for such a life when you have so many responsibilities?
Apparently, and unfortunately, I was mistaken. After reading more and watching additional videos from different creators, I gained new insights and, surprisingly, changed my mind. I came up with my own definition of a “soft life,” which, of course, isn’t too far off from what others are talking about.
The whole concept of living a soft life really challenged my old beliefs. This year has been a roller coaster for me — a humbling experience that forced me to unlearn many beliefs that no longer serve me.
I used to think that a life worth living was one where you worked really hard to achieve your goals. I thought that you needed to be harsh with yourself because otherwise, you’d fail.
I relied on self-shaming as my primary motivator, mentally berating myself to get things done.
That approach worked for a while: I shamed myself into getting good grades, shamed myself into getting into a state university, and shamed myself into landing my first job. But over time, this way of living proved to be completely unsustainable. I burned out badly.
That “gifted kid turned burned-out adult” joke always hit close to home for me, even though I was never a “gifted kid” — just a kid who shamed herself into making it through every challenge.
I needed balance, so I started looking for it. My love for the slice-of-life genre in movies, books, and comics breathed new purpose into me. I wanted to live like those characters while staying grounded.
Back then, I didn’t even know “soft life” was a term — I was just trying to live a life that was kind to my well-being.
Soft Life Is Built on Strong Boundaries
You can’t lead a soft life without setting strong boundaries. A huge part of my journey was drawing clear lines in places where I used to let others — and myself — walk all over me. I didn’t do it all at once; I started small.
As a lifelong people-pleaser who thrived on validation tied to hard work, taking even tiny steps felt monumental. But they mattered. They helped me realize that disappointing someone a little isn’t the end of the world.
Where to Start
I started small by breaking an old habit — simply by not doing it anymore: not laughing along.
It might sound silly, but for me, it was huge. In my culture, we’re often expected to prioritize others’ feelings and be polite in social situations, and laughing along is just one of the many ways we do that.
By taking a step back and choosing not to laugh when I didn’t genuinely find it funny, I gradually trained myself to stop laughing at harmful jokes, whether they were directed at others or myself.
And it worked — I wasn’t forcing myself to fake laughter anymore. I was reteaching my brain what’s okay and what isn’t.
From there, I leveled up. I started saying “no” in low-stakes situations — ones where saying no wouldn’t harm me or the other person — and then gradually worked my way up to bigger scenarios.
It’s the simplest steps that lead to bigger ones.
Move On from Using Shame and Self-Hatred to Grow
Shaming yourself into action might work in the short term, but it’s unsustainable in the long run. Growth doesn’t need to come from a place of self-hatred; it can come from kindness and understanding.
When you practically grew up and survived your younger years by shaming and hating yourself, breaking that cycle is not an easy task.
It was like I was performing for an invisible audience, but then I convinced myself that maybe it was just how my brain reacted to something completely unfamiliar.
So, I just kept going, changing my narrative to a more neutral one. For example, if I used to exercise because I hated my appearance, I now reframed it as something I do because I enjoy the refreshing shower afterward and how energized I feel for the rest of the day.
Again, it all circles back to respecting my needs, and over time, it taught me not to abandon myself. I made a big mental note that this is the most sustainable way to build a habit and stay consistent because I’m not constantly hurting myself.
Once I got used to this and became more comfortable with it, even relapses didn’t last long.
Use Tools
Tools like journaling, mindfulness, and accountability systems have been game-changers for me. Since I don’t have a personal mental counselor (though I might really need one, lol), these tools help me stay grounded and remind me that balance is key to living a sustainable, soft life.
I don’t have much spare time, especially during weekdays, so I make sure to choose tools and systems that I can bring with me wherever I go. This means I can journal or seek companionship and advice on the go — whether I’m on the bus heading to work or taking a morning walk on the weekends.
